Everyone says losing fat comes down to calories.
And they’re right…
If you consistently consume fewer calories than your body uses, you’ll lose weight over time.
But there’s a massive piece of the fat-loss conversation that often gets ignored:
Calories determine whether you lose fat.
They don’t determine whether you can stick with the plan.
And that’s where most people run into trouble.
Because you can create the perfect calorie deficit on paper, but if your diet leaves you starving, exhausted, miserable, and constantly thinking about the foods you’re “not allowed” to eat, you’re probably not going to follow it for very long.
That’s why sustainable fat loss isn’t about finding the perfect diet.
It’s about building a nutrition system that you don’t actually want to quit.
The Best Fat Loss Plan Is the One You Can Actually Follow
Imagine I gave you two different nutrition plans.
The first one guarantees that you’ll lose 20 pounds if you follow it.
But it’s incredibly restrictive.
Your favourite foods are gone. You’re hungry all the time. Your energy is terrible. You’re struggling to get through your workouts and your cravings are constantly getting the better of you.
The second plan helps you lose about a pound per week.
But you can still eat foods you enjoy.
You have enough energy to train.
You’re not constantly hungry.
And you can actually see yourself following the plan for the next six months.
Which one do you think is going to get you leaner?
Most people instinctively pick the first one because it promises faster results.
But the second plan is far more likely to work in the real world.
Because theoretical results don’t matter if you can’t sustain the behaviours required to get them.
That’s why I want you to think about fat loss differently.
Instead of asking: “What’s the fastest way I can lose weight?”
Start asking: “How can I make the process easier to stick with?”
And below are the ways to do just that.
Make Your Nutrition Automatic
One of the easiest ways to make losing fat more sustainable is to eliminate unnecessary decisions.
Most people don’t mind eating the same breakfast or lunch regularly.
So use that to your advantage.
Instead of trying to come up with a completely different meal every morning, create two or three go-to options for breakfast.
Do the same thing for lunch.
Ideally, build these meals around:
- A quality protein source
- Fruit and/or vegetables
- Foods that help keep you full
- Foods you actually enjoy eating
Now you’ve eliminated a handful of decisions from your day.
You don’t have to wake up and ask yourself: “What am I going to eat today?” – You already know.
This doesn’t mean you need to eat the exact same foods every day forever.
It simply creates some structure around the meals where you don’t really care about variety.
And that makes it easier to save some flexibility for dinner, weekends, restaurants, and social events.
This process isn’t to make your diet boring.
It’s to make the boring parts automatic so you have more flexibility for the parts you enjoy.
Make the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice
A lot of people think their biggest problem with fat loss is a lack of willpower.
And I don’t think that’s usually the case.
Often, the problem is that the less healthy choice is simply easier to get.
If your kitchen is filled with cookies, chips, crackers and other highly convenient snack foods, guess what you’re probably going to reach for when you’re hungry at 9 p.m.?
It’s not something wrong with you, it’s human behaviour.
So instead of relying on willpower, look at changing your environment.
Keep fruit somewhere visible.
Prep vegetables that are easy to grab, and you actually enjoy.
Have easy, high-protein snacks available.
Keep those foods that you want less of somewhere less convenient – or simply don’t keep them at home.
If you REALLY want that bag of chips, walk to the store and get an individual sized bag.
More often than not though, you’ll just eat what you have at home.
The easier it is to make a good decision, the more often you’ll make one.
And this doesn’t only apply at home.
It applies when you’re eating out, too.
Because let’s be honest:
Life gets busy.
Sometimes you’re grabbing food between meetings.
Sometimes you’re running your kids to sports.
Sometimes you’re getting home after a late-night rec hockey game.
That doesn’t mean you’ve failed your diet – It means you’re living your life.
The solution isn’t to avoid restaurants forever, It’s to have a plan for them.
You need to know the meals you can order that fit reasonably well within your goals.
That way, when you’re standing in a drive-thru hungry and exhausted, you don’t have to make the decision from scratch.
You already know what you’re getting.
So check out this blog on some of the better choices you can grab from your favourite fast food stop to help you continue losing fat even when you’re on the road.
Stop Trying to Change Everything at Once
This is probably one of the biggest mistakes I see people make when they decide they’re finally going to get serious about their health and losing fat.
They try to fix everything.
They start tracking calories.
They meal prep every Sunday.
They go to the gym five days a week.
They start walking 10,000 steps every day.
They cut out alcohol.
They take a dozen supplements.
They try to sleep eight hours.
They start meditating.
They completely overhaul their diet.
And they try to do all of it starting Monday…
Two weeks later they’re overwhelmed and frustrated that they can’t stick to it.
Then they quit.
Not because they’re lazy.
But because they created a lifestyle that was impossible to maintain.
Instead, I want you to focus on momentum.
Ask yourself:
What’s one change that could make a meaningful difference without requiring a massive amount of effort?
Maybe it’s adding more protein to your meals.
Maybe it’s taking a 10-minute walk after dinner.
Maybe it’s planning your lunches for the week.
Maybe it’s simply eating a serving of fruit or vegetables with lunch.
Pick one.
Work on it until it feels easy.
Then build on it.
That’s how sustainable change actually happens.
Small wins create confidence.
Confidence makes it easier to take the next step.
And eventually, the things that once required effort become normal.
Stop Making Fat Loss the Goal
Here’s the mindset shift that changed how I think about losing fat.
Most people think their goal is fat loss… But is it really?
You probably don’t just want the number on the scale to go down – You want to feel athletic again.
You want more energy.
You want to feel comfortable in and out of your clothes.
You want to feel confident playing sports.
You want to be able to keep up with your kids.
You want to feel like your body isn’t holding you back from doing the things you enjoy.
Fat loss is simply one of the outcomes you’re looking for.
So instead of making fat loss the goal, make your goal to build the lifestyle that produces fat loss.
Those are two very different things.
When losing fat is the goal, you’re more likely to look for:
- Crash diets
- Extreme calorie deficits
- New supplements
- The latest fat-loss hack
- Foods you’re “not allowed” to eat
- Short-term challenges
But when building the lifestyle is the goal, you start looking for:
- Better meal structure
- More protein
- Easier food choices
- More daily movement
- Better routines
- Strategies for eating out
- Habits you can actually maintain
And when those behaviours consistently produce a calorie deficit?
Fat loss becomes a byproduct of your lifestyle.
That’s a much more sustainable approach.
Raise Your Fitness Floor, Not Your Fitness Ceiling
This is one of my favourite concepts when it comes to sustainable fat loss.
Your fitness ceiling is what you’re capable of doing when everything goes perfectly.
You meal prep.
You train five days a week.
You hit your steps.
You sleep eight hours.
You track everything.
Your nutrition is perfect.
Life is great.
That’s your ceiling – But what happens when your kid gets sick? You have a crazy week at work? You’re travelling?
What happens when your schedule gets completely thrown off?
That’s where your fitness floor matters.
Your floor is what you can still do when life gets crazy.
Now keep in mind – Your results aren’t determined by your best week. They’re determined by your average weeks.
If you can raise your floor even a little bit, your average gets better.
Maybe your perfect week includes five workouts.
But your minimum during a crazy week is two.
Maybe your perfect week has perfectly planned meals.
But your minimum is simply making sure you get enough protein and making reasonable choices when eating out.
Maybe your perfect week has 10,000 steps every day.
But your minimum is taking a 15-minute walk after dinner with your family.
That’s sustainable.
And over months and years, those small differences add up.
Make Fat Loss Easier
You don’t need to make your life harder to start losing fat. You need to make the behaviours that support your goals easier to repeat.
Start with one change.
Make your nutrition more automatic.
Make healthy choices more convenient.
Have a plan for busy days and eating out.
Build your habits one at a time.
And most importantly, stop measuring success by how perfect your week was.
Measure it by what you can consistently do when life isn’t perfect.
Because the goal isn’t to build a lifestyle that produces amazing results when everything goes right.
It’s to build a lifestyle that still works when life gets messy.
That’s how you make losing fat easier.
And that’s ultimately the philosophy behind my Everyday Athlete Program.
Rather than trying to overhaul your entire life overnight, we build the habits one step at a time until they become your new normal.
I’ve also made the first six weeks of my Everyday Athlete Nutritional Framework completely free.
It walks you through the foundational habits I use with my online clients before moving into a dedicated fat-loss phase.
