In 2025 I watched 69 new movies (new to me, not just released in 2025) and here’s a breakdown of one’s I loved, one’s you should check out if you haven’t, and the ones that disappointed me the most
Here’s my top 8 for the year:
8. Smile 2 – Massive upgrade from the first one and a solid horror movie to check out
7. Bugonia – Just a crazy movie all around, I think the end dropped it down a spot or two but still such a wild ride to watch
6. Mickey 17 – Fun Sci-Fi movie with a not-so-subtle political satire included
5. Wake Up Deadman – Just a phenomenal movie that will keep you guessing until the end
4. Sinners – While I didn’t love as much as most, I still loved the movie. The setting, the music, the performances – all top teir
3. Wild Robots – Holy crap, this was a fun, heart-warming and beautifully made movies
2. Weapons – Could have easily been my top movie of the year, just such a unique way to present a horror movie, with one of the most satisfying and fun final scenes of the year.
1. How To Train your Dragon – I had never watched the animated one until this year, and then watching the live action version was amazing. The animation/CGI were amazing (I swear I forgot dragons weren’t real at one point), such a great story and characters to get behind, and god damn, I cannot get that score out of my head. Can’t believe it took me this long to watch this.
Here are 8 that might not have been my favourite – but I think you should check out:
– Strange Darling – while I wasn’t a fan of the ending, it’s a movie that will keep you wondering what the hell is going on until the end
– The Wolf Of Snow Hollow – a unique twist on a classic style of horror movie. Nice Dark comedy
– Until Dawn – I never heard of the video game, but the movie had an interesting horror movie concept that was executed just fine.
– Palm Springs – This was a fun, cute little romantic comedy with some great casting
– American Fiction – Again, a nice “smart” comedy. The ending left a little to be desired by me – but I still laughed pretty good at it
– The Assessment – Such a well done, and intriguing movie. I felt like I could have watched another hour of this.
– Swiped – An interesting look behind the world of dating apps, which I assume was heavily dramatized but still interesting.
– Companion – The less you know about this going in, the better. Seriously, don’t even watch the trailer or read the synopsis
And finally, here are my most disappointing movies of 2025. I can’t say they are the worst, because I’m just a gym bro who likes to watch movies – but these are the ones that let me down the most… and some are just straight ass:
8. Woman in the yard – I get what they were going for, but damn did it not deliver
7. Godzilla x Kong: New Empire – even for a summer blockbluster style movie, this one just did nothing for me
6. Kraven The Hunter – I knew it was bad going in, but man.. that sucked, especially as a spiderman fan. Stop it with these.
5. The Wretched – Just a predictable, non-exciting movie that I wouldn’t even really classify as a horror
4. Fear Street: Prom Queen – This is a movie I would have watched when I was 13 to impress a girl who read the fear street books. Just offered nothing original, fun, or unique.
3. Monkey – I was so hyped for this movie, but it just was not it. One trope played over and over again on repeat. Good idea, such disappointing execution.
2. Conjuring: Last Rites – Probably shouldn’t be THIS high but man, the ending was probably one of the worst god damn things I’ve seen from a movie in a long time. After the first two, it’s been all downhill for the franchise
1. Him – I hated this movie the most because it could have went a number of different ways to make it a good movie, but never settled on one direction or theme. Marlon Wayanes was great in this, but this movie was just awful.
